Great idea:  Let’s call a WR screen to Jarvis Landry so he can run into a sea of defenders for no gain.  When it doesn’t work, try it again.  And again.

Better idea:   Never call a rollout for your QB.  Instead, drop him back straight and watch him get sacked.

Alternative idea:  Never toss a pitchout to Ajayi.   Instead, run it up the middle each time.

Smart idea:   Always always always snap the ball on “One.”   Never ever trick the opponent.  It’s unfair.

New winning idea:    First down is always a pass.   Second is always a run.    Third is always a pass that is short of the yardage we need.   Never mix it up.   Unfair to fool an opponent.

Novel idea:  When your offensive line plays like garbage, then by all means don’t change anything.   Instead, bring in extra receivers so that the same 5 linemen get no help whatsoever.    Tony Romo points out how effective the Ravens are with the double-tackle lineup, and Adam Gase refuses to try ANYTHING like it.

A final thought:   When you create a decent play…like the play vs. Atlanta when Landry reversed field for an easy touchdown…then never ever ever try it again.    Just because something is successful doesn’t mean I should use it, right?

What a horrible horrible play caller this guy is.

  1. 1) Matt Moore isn’t athletic enough to excute a rollout. 2)The receiver screen to Landry hardly ever works because the lead receiver always gets his block blown up. They should call that play for Grant or Caroo and let Landry lead block. 3) The 3rd down play to Damon Williams may have been a td if he didn’t fall. 4) Neither Cutler or Moore are any good but now I understand that Cutler was signed simply because of his athletic upside. While Moore does have a good arm and experience his lack of athleticism is why he’ll never be a NFL-caliber starter. The play-calling is limited when he starts because Gase basically has to throw the read-option out. 5) Hopefully they draft a starter caliber guard early on next year. Or hopefully Asiata will be ready by then if ever. The o-line play at guard is killing Ajayi.

    1. They need to draft olinesman in their natural positions (stop trying to convert tackles to guards and vise versa). Pouncey is totally done, so please get a center. They need to sell out on that line. Stop drafting wide receivers!

Anonymous…your points are all true, but almost all of them are ADAM GASE’s fault.
Yes, On Landry screen, the two lead receivers always get blown up…because Adam Gase puts them there. Flank Landry by himself on one side of the line. When he catches the pass, he only has ONE person to beat. Instead, Gase crowds the area.
Yes, Damien Williams fell down. But why was he on the field in the first place? Did Gase bench Matt Moore on third down? Did he bench Jarvis Landry? NO. Gase routinely benches Jay Ajayi on third down. When you use undrafted substitute RBs on the most important plays, you get what you pay for Gase.
Yes, our O-line play is horrible. But Gase refuses to mix anything up. He thinks Pouncey is a good player, for example.

      1. Agreed put people in a position to succeed or not at all if they can’t handle it. Williams does do some good things but he should only be put in if Ajayi needs rest. Heck why aren’t we seeing Drake more he’s made big plays and they only play him now after the games over. He’s very fast as well and can spark this team when down.

  2. This guy only knows how to call drive killers. If there is one thing I’ve learned from years of watching football is that coaches are stubborn and would rather get fired doing it their way rather than try to implement some innovation into their offense. Henning, Sherman, Lazor and now Gase are follow the same blueprint. How they win is more important the winning itself.

Dizanthium, welcome. You have a pretty original point there. The stubborn arrogance of Adam Gase is far more damaging to this team than the occasional lack of execution that his own plays cause.
Damien Williams missed a block on a huge sack. Damien then fell down on a sure-thing touchdown. An average fan (and Adam Gase himself) will blame Damien.
However, I blame the man who ordered Damien into the game. Adam Gase consistently benches Jay Ajayi on third down. The opponent loves this and thank him.

      1. I understand that coaches don’t always have the personnel to pull off their dream offense. I’m sympathetic to that. But I’ve seen this movie way too many times before to think that it’s always the personnel. A few wrinkles in the plays called can go a long way. Any time you have to make a db or lb stop and think for a second about what you’re going to do, even if the play gets blown up from time to time, can be so valuable. How do you think the Phins won last week? The Jets had no game plan for Matt Moore.

Very well said. I pointed out that remarkable play in the Falcons game when Landry reversed field right before the snap. A wrinkle like that = success.

          1. It’s strange how fleeting these plays have been the last few years. It’s hard to turn weaknesses into strengths but that’s what good coaches do. It’s safe to say we haven’t seen any real ingenuity in the offense since Marino left.

            1. Author

Discipline and execution can easily make up for a lack of ingenuity. We don’t have any of it. Have you ever once seen the Steelers or Patriots run an original play? No. They practice the same old stuff a zillion times and come out ready to execute the plays they know like the back of their hands. We can’t even run a basic screen pass into the flat. It’s an iffy adventure every time for us, but for other teams it’s the most standard pass play there is.

              1. Ingenuity is not just the plays but the formations as well. I live in Boston and watch the Pats regularly. To me it’s not so much the plays with the Pats, but the amount of formations that they use to run similar stuff.

This is one of the things which allow them to dictate the pace of play. They love nothing more than to make you guess if you’re lining up the right way and that’s how they get you with the quick passes which set up all the other plays. In all fairness, you get pretty good at this if the coach and QB have been together a billion years.

As it relates to us Phins fans, Gase just got here and has been dealt a band hand with injuries and poor oline decisions (a systemic issue going on since the early 2000s). We all know there are no quick fixes and it normally takes years to get a good system going in a league that usually gives you zero time to do it.

But I’ve seen that deer in the headlights look from Gase that I’ve seen before from other coaches in Miami. Either he adapts his play calling and formations or he adapts how he coaches up the team such that they will execute. But he better adapt because that is nothing close to a pro product he is putting out there.

  3. I called this game a loss in the preseason thur on the road in Baltimore never turns out especially with a third string QB. Why are they always on the road on thur???

Either way this Moore being a starter has to stop. As I said before off the bench he’s great but when a good defence has time to gameplan it’s over. That’s why they brought in Cutler. Also doughty is obviously garbage so why keep him bring in someone with upside if that’s the case.

I guess write it off they’ll have time to get healthy and hopefully fix that oline as its shit. They better draft 2-3 of them next year!!!

Not blaming the D they had zero support. Alonso also didn’t have time to let up flaco has to give up sooner should be lesson learned.

    1. Yeah Flacco’s slide looked extremely late. Little time to pull up at that speed.

      1. The QB’s are protected if they use it flacco was greedy he wanted the first and Alonso was only doing his job. You can’t slide that late if he goes early no problem. I’m actually mad that the ravens weren’t flagged for retaliation should have been offsetting Alonso’s helmet was ripped off and he was tackled.

Either way they need to fix that oline maybe Larsen will help. Not sure what’s going on with Asiata? They simply couldn’t run the ball so this isn’t all on Moore but at the end time Dion Sanders called it by saying it’s also not all on Cutler or even Tanny. When the oline is ok they produce when not they stink…

      2. Author

He didn’t even slide horizontally, which would put his head low to the ground safely. Instead, he sort of squatted in place, leaving his head way too high.

        1. Because he was going for the first and realized I better get down but it was too late. Fine that the refs called it but retaliation should have been offsetting. Guaranteed that happens in reverse….

          1. Author

True. The cheap-shot that the Center, Jensen, put on Alonso was called, but then the refs decided to forget about it. You may not retaliate just because the opponent committed a penalty.
How about later, when Jensen was holding Suh’s jersey, and Suh pushed his hands away. PUSHED HIS HANDS. Not his face or head or body. Suh got 15 years for that garbage call.
Suh later choking Mallett is the one that will get him suspended. Or arrested. that one wasn’t cool

            1. On Suh’s behalf the refs lost control if they had made the correct calls it would have never turned into a choke hold. On a good note the sportscasters all agreed that the hit was on flacco for not sliding earlier. Even Mooch who’s on the safety committee had to admit this yes you want to protect QB’s but you have to be realistic and some QB’s pretend to slide then go for a first or TD when the D lets up. They need to explain to QB’s and refs that they can’t have both and call it accordingly.

              1. Author

Fully agree. The refs did nothing to de-escalate anything.
The fouls on Suh were instigated by the Ravens players, but the refs forgot to look

  4. Yeah deep down inside a part of Tannehill has to be skinning and grinning thinking about how some of these so-called fans have been blaming him for this ish for years. His injury gives fans perspective on how flawed this roster is on the o-line.

  5. This team needs guards, a free safety, and a impactful upgrade at tight end.

    1. Author

yes, but they will draft more WRs

    2. Good news McDonald and Larsen are coming back soon so that should help a bit but I’m drafting at least a OG maybe two and C although Brenner was probably better than Pouncey! OT may be ok as even back ups aren’t bad it’s the interior as we already knew!

      1. Author

Yes, McDonald has one more game to sit. I think Larsen is eligible sooner, depending on how the NFL defines the revised injured reserve clauses.
