With Ryan Tannehill as the team’s sure starter and Matt Moore as the clear backup, the Dolphins were faced with an interesting dilemma this off-season.
Pat Devlin, Brady Quinn, and Seth Lobato all had a legitimate chance to earn the #3 spot. But what many people didn’t see coming was that the Dolphins would carry just 2 QBs.
This can be a dangerous scenario if your top 2 guys get hurt. And originally, we thought that Miami should have kept a third QB on the roster (we’re talking about actual game-day rosters, not practice squad).
In the past, a team could keep an emergency QB in uniform on game days without him counting as an active player, but the NFL banned this in 2011. Now if you want a 3rd QB available on game days, he has to take up a valid roster spot. The Dolphins felt that Seth Lobato in that spot was unneeded.
After studying the Dolphins roster, we think this is a good move. First of all, a third QB rarely gets into a game. There has to be two bad injuries to the top two guys, and that just doesn’t too often. it’s possible, yes, but not historically probable.
Another factor is how effective Lobato would be in a real NFL game in a real emergency. He didn’t look that great against the 4th and 5th stringers he faced in pre-season (neither did Devlin or Quinn), so it’s safe to assume he’d do awful against first-stringers.
So why keep a guy active who (1) probably won’t get into the game and (2) isn’t good enough to make a difference?
What do you think?

Shoulda kept Pat Devlin.
Its kinda one of those decisions that will probably work out just fine. But if T-Hill gets hurt will the opposing teams look to go for the jugular by then trying to take out Matt Moore? Heck even its a serious penalty and a fine. How much would taking out a division rival be worth? Thats the only scenario that scares me. I think they have already somewhat addressed this by signing Seth Labato to the practice squad. Hes bad enough nobody will claim him but good enough to bail us out in case Matt Moore is unable to play. I say for now its a fine move. Lets
hope it doesn’t come back to haunt us .
Read this article and see for yourself just how many experts picked the Pats to win today. All but one were wrong. If that doesnt tell you just how much and how many still doubt us. Than nothing will. But they were ALL WRONG! What say you DolphinsTruth?
