If Stephen Ross decides that Brian Flores has lost this team after only 2.5 years, he’ll probably replace Flores with someone interim internally.   So we won’t have a real new coach until the upcoming off-season.

A LOT of “if’s” are in play here.  I doubt Ross will fire Flores, but in the back of his mind, he must think about it.  He should definitely fire Grier.  We can only hope Ross realizes it.

In addition to Dan Quinn, as was mentioned yesterday as a possible upgrade from Flores, I’d like to see an unemployed Doug Pederson come in.  He knows how to win–how to beat the Patriots especially–and he has a chip on his shoulder for getting ousted from Philly.   Who the hell fires a coach a year after winning a Super Bowl?

Also–even though he’s had many chances–I still think Rex Ryan is a great option.  He got to several AFC title games with Mark Sanchez for God’s sake.  This guy knows defense…his own defense that works.   He didn’t make a name for himself overseeing Bill Belichick’s defense like Flores did.  Ryan is NOT the nice-guy friendly coach who the players like to hang out with.  He’s the boss that players will fear.  THAT has been missing from the Dolphins for the past 20 years or so.

    Jon Gruden?
Lots of different views about Gruden’s resignation this morning. I would have stayed and kept apologizing if I were him. Maybe fight back with the “sticks and stones” defense. He used words. Period. From what I hear, he still may get paid his $10 million per year.
Either way, I can’t see another team hiring him, just because of the backlash it would cause.

  2. I’m all in on the HC picks above-I’d like to see Flores get his opportunity, I like the guy and hope he does well…but if it doesn’t work out, I don’t think Ross should wait-this business is about winning.
This team, these coaches, need a “no doubt about it, I’m the Head Coach and don’t you think otherwise” coach. We need fire, we need some ice in those veins, yet players would lay it all down for him on the field. Then an offensive coordinator that can orchestrate innovate plays others haven’t developed. Basically need a great corp of coaches that have the passion, desire this team and city have been missing. It happens on other teams, why not this one? Grier has got to go and I don’t care if he’s let go during the season-he’s done the damage already.

  3. Any of the above mentioned names would be good as they all have prior head coaching experience. Omar Kelly was quoted as saying that Flores doesn’t listen to anybody. Now, he didn’t elaborate but Omar does have connections so… take it with a grain of salt. As they say…

I think it’s great for a coach to not listen to anyone. A little bit of cocky arrogance can be great. BUT…only if you have already proven your success. Belichick and John Harbaugh and others are so smug you want to punch them, but they have earned that right with years of success. Flores has a losing record and still wants to dictate and not listen? It doesn’t work that way.

  4. All good choices. I think this cloumn should be posted in the Dolphin lockerroom. Anyone have the keys?

I’m still wondering why we cruised down the field on our opening possession by doing nothing but passing the ball to Gaskin. Then we got to the Tampa 9 yardline, and THEN they decide to “fool” the Bucs by running the ball twice for minimal gains. The Dolphins are the only team out there that abandons something when it is working well.

  5. Josh Boyer gave a frank assessment of his defense through five weeks.

Ran into this article. To answer you Mr. Boyer, you suck. All teams have been gutting your defense with slants and your D-backs dont check anyone at the line. What kind of grade school, flag football coach are you to not employ a basic of defensive strategy? This is rudimentary stuff and we cant even get this right. And I was having a good day until this!!!

West, don’t worry. Flores and Boyer will watch the game film because they have to get better.

  6. I would call up Pederson and offer him the offensive coordinator job. Let Flores focus on D. Pay Pederson enough to jump at it. If the D isn’t fixed then you have Pederson to bring in his group. I’d love to see this.

As per Grier I can’t give up on the new players yet it’s way too early although I agree he seems to get too cute. Tries to make the big play when very good players are falling to him. Iggy for instance was a long shot when he could have had some DB’s that were pretty much sure things. I don’t think Waddle would have dropped to 12 but many other good players would have including the stud OT that ended up in LAC. Some of this has to be coaching as well as there is no way you pick 9 guys in the top two rounds and they all suck. It’s impossible….

Well, I think Flores already DID commit to concentrating on defense. He’s not vain enough to think of himself as an offensive guru, so he realizes he needs a good offensive coordinator. And that is where is problem lies. He is a poor evaluator of coaches. He brings in his inexperienced low-level coaching friends and promotes them to the second-most important job on the team. George Godsey? Eric Studesville? Charlie Frye calling in plays? Chad O’Shea? Dowell Loggins?
No other team in the NFL has even heard of these fellows, and yet the Dolphins elevate them from assistant-backup-positional-aide to OC.
Meanwhile, we get rid of coaches like Brian Daboll (now running Buffalo’s offense) and Dan Quinn (former Falcons head coach and now Cowboys DC). We just can’t win. Our leaders have no eye for talent.

  7. Who are you going to blame for this mess? Who does the hiring? Who’s in charge? From the top is a good place to start…
