As you all probably have seen the last few weeks, there is no news anywhere in the football world.   (Except maybe that the XFL started again, but the rules are so ridiculous, I lost interest after 20 minutes.

The local reporters have told us for two years that the Dolphins are taking Tua.   But now they’re switching to a variety of alternatives to cover themselves for the inevitable if/when Miami picks someone else.   All of a sudden now–out of the blue and with no truth–they’re saying that the Phins love Justin Herbert the most now.  It went from Tua to Burrow to Herbert in the course of the last year.  Why can’t these reporters and “inside information” clowns just admit they are guessing?

Here’s my take.   The Dolphins pick 5th.  We keep hearing about Burrow going #1 and then Chase Young #2.   Then a couple of other guys who don’t matter, and then the Dolphins take Tua at # 5.  Or perhaps we take Herbert at #5.

But here’s the thing I’ve been saying all year…I do not think Tua and Herbert will be available at #5.  Burrow certainly won’t be.   I think the “experts” have it wrong.

The draft order is this:  Bengals, Redskins, Lions, Giants, Dolphins, Chargers.     The main incorrect assumption in the media and the experts is that in the Top 5 picks, only the Dolphins and Bengals will select a QB.  And that, my friends, is a gigantic assumption.

Let’s assume Burrow goes #1 to the Bengals.   There is talk of him holding out, but one way or another, he goes #1.  Most experts say the Redskins will take Chase Young at #2.  But that is the big assumption.   The Skins had a year to watch Dwayne Haskins, and he didn’t show much.  An injured Tua or an iffy Herbert is still light years better than Haskins.  The Skins know this.

The same can be said for the Giants and Daniel Jones.  He had a nice season, but he is far from elite.  Tua limping on one leg is a better passer than Jones showed this year.  The Giants know this too.  Would the Skins and Giants BOTH ignore Tua and Herbert because they say, “Our current mediocre QB is good enough, so we don’t need to look for anyone better.” Remember, the Cardinals last year set a big precedent by giving up on a first-round QB (Josh Rosen) because someone much better was available 11 months later.

The Lions are also in the mix.  Matt Stafford isn’t getting younger nor healthier.   Nor is he proving himself to be a leader or a winner.  Wouldn’t it behoove the Lions to draft a young, exciting new QB with a ton of potential instead of riding the injured Stafford train that much longer?   I think the Lions are primed to select a QB.  They tanked in 2019 in a way the Dolphins should have.   When Stafford got hurt, the Lions didn’t even try.  They went with a couple of bum unknown QBs, and never won a game the rest of the year. Barely even tried.    THAT’s how you do it.

Now for the Chargers, who pick after us but who can easily trade up to get ahead of us.  In case you missed it, they cut Phil Rivers.   They have no QB.   And they’re smart enough to not sign a journeyman QB just so they can win 4 or 5 games next year.  (The Dolphins were NOT that smart).  No, make no mistake about it.   The Chargers will be drafting a QB.  And I guarantee they are smart enough to know that Tua and Herbert won’t be there at #6.  They’ll be moving up.

We’d all be mad if the Dolphins drafted an interior defensive lineman or an un-needed WR with the 5th overall pick.  We’d be angry…but would we be surprised?  Personally, I’d say no.  The history of illogic that comes from our front office is baffling at times.   Let’s just hope they have some contingencies ready, because there are teams out there who want Tua and Herbert a lot more than we do, and they won’t be content to just sit back.

Please don’t blow this!

  1. I honestly think they will somehow get Burrow ……I don’t care if we even draft a qb this year …maybe even trade down #5 and #26 for more picks this year and next …give Rosen a year and go all in for a qb in 2021.

    1. Yep I could live with that. Trade back and take a stud OT. Then grab a rush OLB and CB. Sign another OT or OG or both. RB in second and a C. Trade back multiple times if no one is there and load up for 2021 get a QB then if Rosen doesn’t improve. You can also take a QB later in the first or second this year if there is someone you love. Of course if things fall to you at five may as well pull the trigger but I’d hate to see them move up unless they are 100% confident.

Agreed, it’s not do or die. Our championship window isn’t even open yet. Other teams’ championship window is closing fast, and they’ll be the ones to make a foolish, desperate pick

Interesting reports today of Mel Kiper agreeing with me (but I said it way sooner). He now thinks the Lions will take Tua and Washington will either take Herbert or else trade down.
That’s 3 QBs in the Top 5, and then Chase Young will be the 4th guy in that mix.
So when the Dolphins pick at #5, none of the big-name glamour players will be left. THAT is why we shoulda rolled over let let the Eagles and Bengals beat us.

    1. If this is the case then take Jeff Okundah and proceed with O-linemen. Unless there are offers to trade up to take him, then trade down for more picks and assemble the best O-line ever.

      1. Yeah they could do that or take that LB. If OT’s are getting picked they could trade up from 18 to get a good one or just take what comes to them. Either way they need players so nothing’s a bad pick.

  3. I saw the Lions wanting to trade away from #3 overall pick. They want to keep Matt Stafford, and trade their #3 pick to anyone who wants Tua or Herbert.
Like admin said, these are the consequences of winning 3 December games.
We probably won’t get a QB now. Instead, we’ll get a replacement for Tunsil, a replacement for M. Fitzpatrick and probably an interior D-lineman. Zzzzzzzzz

Don’t get me started. It was nice to beat the Patriots, don’t get me wrong. But being nice isn’t the same as being smart.
