Given Ryan Fitzpatrick’s awful game yesterday, I saw several articles questioning if it’s time for Tua.  My own opinion is it’s not time to start him Sunday against Buffalo.  However, it was time to use him yesterday. The turning point of this game came very early, and no one mentioned it after it happened.  After the Dolphins’ first three and out, we punted, and the Patriots muffed it.  Two Dolphins were nearby, and their effort to grab the ball was nonchalant.  Meanwhile, the Pat who muffed the punt and the other guy who got pushed into him, both went all out to recover the ball.  The team that tried harder–indeed the team that wanted it more–got the ball.  You can’t teach that kind of effort and awareness…or can you? Take a few minutes to watch this video of a few Dolphins miked up during practice.  Mike Gesicki, Shaq Lawson, and Jerome Baker talk a lot of smack and seem to be having fun.  Bobby McCain is all business. The best part about the Dolphins allowing some fans into their home games is that Sean McDermott, the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, is whining about it! I love it! McDermott doesn’t whine when the Dolphins have to go up to frigid Buffalo to play December games, but when the Dolphins try to begin a sense of normalcy in the world, he opens his mouth.  I hope all 13,000 fans are all diehard Dolphin fans who make as much noise as possible. Hard to believe that opening day, if it happens, is less than a month away. On Monday–most important to the players–real practices start, with hitting and contact and tackling/blocking drills allowed.   Also–more important to fans–is that the media will be allowed in to film certain parts and report on things.  We’ll get our first real looks at the rookies. The news hit over the weekend about Jerome Baker and new offensive lineman Ereck Flowers having covid-19. It’s obviously not good news for anyone, but they are also not shocking, unexpected cases. The NFL had protocols in place before camps begun to curb th spread as much as possible. As sports go, the NFL never said “no one will catch Coronavirus; we’re immune.” Instead, they knew it would happen and they have their policies in place. Man, this is a dreadfully painful time with no sports.  As I’ve said since day one, having to go without sports and having to cancel a vacation—that’s nothing compared to people losing their lives to the virus.  I’d rather have this minor inconvenience than suffer what others have been through.  But after 3 or 4 months, I’m really eager to get back to normal…if only mother nature would agree. Various reports indicate that Xavien Howard will not be suspended to begin the 2020 season, if there is one. The legal charges were dropped, but Howard still could have faced discipline from Roger Goodell under the league’s personal conduct policy.  Apparently, even that will not occur, and it’s great news for the Dolphins. The NFL reported today that it’s toying with a shorter pre-season (2 games instead of 4).   I’m curious what you all think. Me?   I am all for it.   The NFL preseason is like no other.  It’s grueling. It’s violent and dangerous.  It’s meaningless like the Pro Bowl, if you’re a veteran.   But to rookies dying to make the team, it’s life and death.  Put those rookies and the vets on the field at the same time, and it’s scary. 2020 has featured so much uncertainty that it’s hard to get an accurate indication of when certain NFL milestones will be coming. Training camp seems a long way off still, but there is some progress.   Teams might be able to resume in-person meetings (whether it’s just coaches or players or both is unknown).  Actual practices are not around the corner, but it gives us something to look forward to.
