The Denver Broncos are the latest team to take a chance on young Billy.  After getting cut twice by the Dolphins and then the Ravens, Turner tries again. On other news, Reshad Jones is questionable for Sunday…and the season.   Her has a potential rotator cuff injury.   That’s not as devastating to a safety as it is to a baseball player, so I predict Jones will tough it out. As we always say at Dolphins Truth, it’s not rocket science.   When something (or someone) is working well, then keep doing it.  Over and over again, until it no longer works.  And by relation, if something is NOT working, then you must abandon it. Fulton Walker, the first man to ever return a kickoff for a touchdown in a Super Bow, has passed away at 58. For those too young to remember, Walker was an average defensive back for the Dolphins, but his claim to fame was spectacular kickoff return vs. the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XVII.   At the time, the Dolphins were tied with Washington, and Walker’s return got us right back in the lead. First of all, right off the start, don’t get me wrong.  I will not defend the play of Turner or Thomas.  They had some potential but never lived up to it, never excelled, never seemed passionate enough to destroy any competition.  Whether it was an opponent on Sunday afternoons or a rookie lineman fighting to take their jobs away in camp, Thomas and Turner never once raised their game to an acceptable level. Now we know why Tunsil missed the game. Incredible. I’ve been studying Adam Gase’s ongoing press conference, and it’s becoming more and more apparent that he just doesn’t get it.   He blames the offensive line entirely, and doesn’t see any flaws in Tannehill.  When the defense is running straight at Tannehill AND HE JUST SITS THERE AND LETS HIMSELF GET SACKED, Gase just said, literally, “There’s nothing we can do about that.”  Read More →

Back in January, before the ink on his contract was dry, I was one of the few Dolphins writers who told you why it was a mistake to hire Adam Gase.   More on that later. But first, I have to tell you why I’m doubling down on my assertion that Gase isn’t good.   And today we saw two hugely important reasons. Looks like Xavien Howard will be gone for about a month, with a knee injury he suffered Thursday in practice.  This team can’t catch a break with our injuries to our least-deep areas.   We have the worst secondary and LBs in the league, made worse the past month with all the injuries.   Not that we “prefer” injuries to other parts of the team, but those are easier to overcome. Wow, the Buffalo Bills showed the correct way to handle a 3rd-string quarterback.  In harassing and confusing New England QB Jacoby Brissett all day long, the Bills were able to shut out New England.   Yes, they shut out New England.  At Foxboro.  Is Rex Ryan THAT much smarter than the Dolphins?    We gave up 7 points to Brissett, and it turned out to be the difference in the game.   The Texans gave up 27 to the bum.  The Bills?   They gave up zero.  I envy a defense like that. Despite everything that’s happened in the past 4 weeks, we have to look back several months ago.   Back in the spring when the NFL first released its schedule, we knew this was coming. Oh boy.   Where to start. THE GOOD: Reshad Jones had a great game and was all over the place.  I noticed myself, and I was pleased that Adam Gase singled Jones out as a top performer on the day. Matt Darr had some effective punts, and he was a true weapon on his one and only punt in overtime. The offensive line couldn’t get much going in run support, but they gave Tannehill time mostly all day in the passing department, even when we were forced to use a third-string center and when Ja’Wuan James got benched. I thought we were doomed when Jamar Taylor of all people  intercepted Tannehill’s first pass of the day. I thought we were doomed when Cleveland strip sacked Tannehill and lined up for the winning field goal, all within the last 30 seconds of regulation. Yet somehow, we won this brutally bad contest.  We faced a team with its 4th string QB and gave him 17 points.  Shoulda been more.   Our offense has gone from 10 to 24 to 30 points in our three games, increasing each time, but none of us feel good about it. He we are, still close to the recent dawn of a new season, and the Dolphins are all but out of it already. We’ve only played two games, and we’re already two and a half games behind in our division.   The math is almost illogical, but it’s very true and very sad. It will be very interesting to see how the Patriots handle their QB situation on the short week. I, for one, hate the idea of TNF.   I love having an extra game in prime time, but to be fair to all teams, it should be on a Saturday night, not a Thursday,    Even a Friday would be better.
