Well, the draft is here and gone.  (The next event on the horizon is the schedule release on May 12). The Dolphins basically gave Ereck Flowers to the Redskins in what can only be described as a cost-cutting move. The Dolphins continue to believe that a handful of new offensive linemen and zero continuity year after year after year is a good idea.  It’s an annual merry-go-round on the line.  After letting our most consistent lineman–center Ted Karras–walk away to the Patriots, the Dolphins now get nothing in return for our 2nd best lineman, guard Flowers. Sam Darnold is out as Jets quarterback, in a move that was expected some time ago…but Jets’ management did a good job of playing it coy and not really revealing their plans.  Darnold has been a gift to the Dolphins, and he became as bad as Josh Allen became good.   Opposite paths for these two young men. I don’t like the revolving door and the center position, but at least we got someone to replace Ted Karras, who we should have kept.  Anyway, Matt Skura is serviceable, but I don’t see him as a long-term answer.  the Dolphins don’t see him long-term either, only giving him a one-year deal. The guy just wants to play football. A losing team with zero chance of making the playoffs?  He doesn’t care. A doormat of a team so bad they call themselves the “Football Team?”   He doesn’t care. Thanks to reader Sean for first alerting me to this trade as it occurred on Sunday. With the Dolphins trading for troubled OL Isaiah Wilson, I believe that rules out them going with Penei Sewell at #3.    Cutting Kyle Van Noy opens up a need at LB…a position where we needed major help EVEN IF we kept KVN. I saw an interesting piece today by David Hyde at the Sun Sentinel discussing the ways the Dolphins can use the money that they just saved by cutting Kyle Van Noy.  Among other scenarios, Hyde seems in love with the idea of bringing in Watson.  It’s ridiculous that a Dolphins columnist could be so clueless. With two years under his belt, Brian Flores enters this season clearly as the man in charge of this team. Season One was a wash, as no one knows what was going on with the tanking, and the Fitzpatrick/Rosen situation, etc.  GM Chris Grier seemed to be involved just as much as flores.  Flores played to win with a very limited cast, and he did so five times.  I think that was amazing, as 4 of those 5 wins were against decent teams.  Flores gets credit for having his men prepared and passionate to win. So, Andy Reid’s brilliant defensive scheme was to rush 3 or 4 guys at Tom Brady, which means 7 or 8 men would drop back into coverage.   With 8 men in coverage, surely Brady would not be able to find an open receiver.   That 199os defensive approach was just as successful as you would suspect. I just got off the phone with a colleague who follows the Rams, and we both remain baffled over why the Rams would give away the farm for a player as average as Matt Stafford.
