IN order to get down to the maximum roster size, today was the day for cuts.  Of the following cut players, no one really jumps out at me as a shocker, so that’s a good thing.  With Malcolm Perry cut and Lynn Bowden on IR, I don’t think the Phins will be running any Wildcat this year, but I hope I’m wrong.   Normally cut day would be bigger news, but this year–with the ominous cloud of Watson coming to town–I’m more concerned about this possible trade than in any of the guys we cut:

  • OL Cameron Tom
  • QB Reid Sinnett
  • SAF Nate Holley
  • RB Patrick Laird
  • WR Kai Locksley
  • WR Kirk Merritt
  • WR Malcolm Perry
  • TE Chris Myarick
  • OL Durval Quieroz Neto
  • DL Jason Strowbridge
  • DL Jonathan Ledbetter
  • CB Javaris Davis
  • CB Cre’Von LeBlanc
  • RB Jordan Scarlett
  • WR Khalil McClain
  • OL Matt Skura
  • DL Tyshun Render
  • LB Benardrick McKinney

If you are with me and against the Watson deal, then you should read the last TWO columns by Greg Cote: https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/

He sums it up well. I rarely agree with the guy, but his points are sound.

He seems to think that Charles Robinson’s story about Watson over the weekend was perhaps not trustworthy. I don’t know about that. I too am leery of the infamous “unnamed source,” but it’s hard for a journalist to simply invent “facts” and then say “somebody told me that.”

  2. I think Doaks was cut which is crazy since they only have 3 RBs unless they are hoping to snag someone or stash him on the PS.

Too bad about Merritt and Sinnett as they both played well. Perhaps its not the end of them with the Fins.

I’m sure there will be some waiver claims will be interesting.

    1. I hope you’re right FFF… especially when it comes to Sinnett.

Third stringers rarely if ever play, so I’m not too worried about that. I remember guys like Sage Rosenfels looking spectacular in their pre-season finales, and I was like “Oh we MUST keep him. He looks great!” Just like Sinnett, I think we’ll be okay and we’ll retain Sinnett to the taxi squad.
Cutting both Doaks and Laird was a head scratcher. So we’re going with Gaskin, Ahmed, and newcomer Malcolm Brown. This could be fine on game days if we’re employing a pass-heavy attack. But personally I’d prefer 4 RBs on the roster, so don’t be surprised if we pick one up from another team. I know the Rams just got Sony Michell, and he was someone I had my eye on. Oh well.

Malcolm Perry was claimed by the Patriots. Of all the guys we cut yesterday, only Perry has been reclaimed by someone.
He had plenty of opportunities to shine in 2020, but I never saw much out of him. And then in the 2021 preseason–and he had to know his job was on the line–he looked pretty average to me. I don’t think that he is a great loss. Knock on wood.

  4. Fun fact (for me) Jabaal Sheard just made the Dolphins Practice Squad. He’s been in the league ten years now. My step-daughter went to high school with him graduating the same year. That’s my personal connection to the Dolphins 😃

    1. Pretty cool story hopefully one day he can help them.

I didn’t mind Perry you could see he was learning but at the same time not a game changer at this point. If he was the worst that they lost not too bad. Glad that they retained Doaks because if Brown fails they need a tougher runner to step up and he’d be your guy.
