First play was great.   Ball was underthrown, but we will take it.

Dallas Thomas gets the start.  Philbin simply afraid to bench anyone and hurt their feelings.

Everyone knows that the referees favor the Patriots, especially at home.  It is a simple fact.  But don’t take my word for it.  Look at the photo here:

New England's defense and their 13 players.
New England’s defense and their 13 players.

This is right before the second play from scrimmage, right after Miami’s long pass.  Note that the Dolphins are lined up and ready to go.  Look at the top right.  A Patriot (#52) is jogging off the field.  AND he is offside.  Tannehill just has to snap the ball, and we get a free 5 yards.

BUT WAIT!

Look at the ref.  He is standing behind center, and he will not allow the play to begin.  He is holding up his hands, allowing the offisde 12th man to take his time.

Look at his eyes.  He is carefully staring right at New England’s illegal player and allowing him to run off the field.

I watched this on video four times and I still can’t believe it.  He is literally holding up play until New England’s 12 man can get off the field.  Sorry, but the rules do not allow this.  Only a crooked ref will allow this.

Has anyone out there ever seen such obvious cheating, let alone caught on camera?

Anyway, the Dolphins began with a long pass, and then went back to nickel and dime.  Poor execution.  Why did Tannehill throw the ball when he had open field ahead?

Poor planning.  And you saw the result.   New England up 7  already.

Why not at least CONSIDER going for it?   4th and 2 from the Patriot 23 yardline?    Going for 3 is not a terrible decision, but to win a championship, you need to make statements.   Philbin makes whispers.

On that blocked field goal, did any Dolphin lineman block anyone? What a disaster.

After Jwuan James facemask, we have 1st and 25…. And we hand off?

Julian Edelman…can someone please cover him?

Jason Trusnik is the only Dolphin defender who showed up on that first drive.

Man, we get into Pariot territory so easily, and then it collapses every single time.  The killer instinct is just missing from this team.  I truly feel it’s the coach’s fault.   Just look at Philbin’s face at any time.   Does he EVER look tough and determined and gets his men inspired?

Although, there is nothing on earth to blame Joe Philbin for when that useless bum Damian Williams drops an easy 7 points.   Enough with the undrafted free agents!!!!   Just stop it.

  1. Its looking like a grind type of game. The pats will keep attacking our weakness and understand that if they keep doing it eventually the tide will slowly turn. We need a lot of big plays and stops on D to counter that. And we need to stop getting 1st down penalties on offense.

  2. No deep ball huh? Tell that to Damien Williams.

    1. Author

There’s only one thing i want to tell to Damien Williams: ”You are cut, you useless piece of Dolphin waste.”

  3. Author

You don’t often hear me compliment a decision by Joe Philbin, but declining that hold was awise decision. Do NOT give Tom Brady TWO chances to burn you when you can give him only one.

  4. Author

Finnegan needs to make that pick. Man, it hit him right in the hands and numbers.

  5. Author

I don’t wanna hear another comment this year about Mike Wallace’s skill set, his determination, or Tannehill’s ability to throw the deep ball.
Dolfans who are Wallace haters are proving how wrong they are.

  6. Author

Second half. Time for the Dolphins to win this game. WIN. No moral victories. We cannot be satisfied that we’ve shut out Brady pretty much. I’d like to see a different defensive blitz/ rush scheme to throw off Brady. He’s getting too much time

  7. True that D-Truth! Great catch and throw. And finally the right call was made in our favor! This game is turning out to be the apology for last sunday. We look to be outplaying the Pats in every way. Just some unlucky plays that to their credit they capitalized on. So far Im hopeful.

  8. Author

What’s up with CBS and their stupid camera angles. Having a hard time following where the play is.

  9. Author

We know Philbin is awful, but how bad is his review team upstairs? They just gave the Pats a free 20-yard completion even though the ball bounced on the ground. Terrible terrible use of review. Again. Philbin is the worst

    1. You can’t say that for sure. You don’t know what the booth people were telling Philbin, and how quickly they would have seen it. I’m not sure the play would have been overturned – and in a one-point game; already in field goal range, are you willing to risk the timeout early in the 3rd quarter?

      1. Author

Yes, I would risk it. Philbin blows timeouts on defense all the time anyway, so we lose nothing. As a matter of fact, it slows down a New England drive that was plowing us over left and right. Gives our D a breather.
And I disagree about any ambiguity on the replay itself. That ball was on the ground, and THEN pulled up by the Pats receiver. He made a great play, and I’m not saying we deserved to win, but we do need a fast-acting coaching staff who can look for things like that. Just like last week when we sacked Flacco for a safety and no Dolphin staffer saw it.

        1. I would argue that LaFell maintained control of the ball the whole time. You’re acting as if the ball bounced. The ball can hit the ground if the receiver maintains control; and I say nothing to overturn the call as being indisputable.

But from a Dolphins coaching staff point of view, you cannot assume an overturn, and losing a timeout is a big risk at that point – especially in the second half.

I don’t disagree that they’d need to make the decision quickly – I don’t know if they have an Ernie Adams type person as Belichick does – but most teams do.

          1. Author

Mike, I read your comment and went back to watch. I think we both have a point here. The ball was actually moving through his arms…like he caught it, but then he was starting to lose it too. The ball was squirting out between his arms and chest when it hit the ground. No catch. That being said, it might have been too close to overturn. The Dolphins’ Ernie Adam of guy is our QB coach, Zac Taylor, whose only qualification for the job was that he was Mike Sherman’s son-in-law.

Brady just rushed for 18 yards thanks to Philip Wheeler falling flat on his face. Why is this guy still on the team?

    1. This is the same nimble Brady that juked Brian Urlacher out of his shoes a few years back.

  11. I just don’t get it. Philbin has been stellar with his record of challenges. What has happened? That was an easy one. It may not be his fault though, he may rely on others to view and inform him. It seems we’ve lost that important edge and it cost us points.

    1. Philbin hires passive guys who are slow witted and lack the killer instinct like he does. Dan Fouts had time to watch the review and mention it. Not a single Dolphin staff member saw it too?

      1. Author

Down by 11 again but still alive. That missed pass challenge really hurt.

  12. Author

Man, can we ever try a reverse or some type of misdirection? We have the Pats guessing on D, but we dont’t take advantage. I mean, everyone on earth knows we are gonna give it to Miller up the middle. So why not FAKE that play action…especially when we only need 3 yards

  13. Author

INTERCEPTION. lamar MIller got mugged on that pick. So so so hard to get the refs to be fair when they call a Patriot game.

  14. Author

I can’t even finish a sentence before New England puts up more points. Jimmy Wilson is the worst. Obviously he is only in there because of injuries to our real players, but still. Can you name one memorable thing he’s done all year? Now we have to hear about how great the overrated Gronkowski is because Jimmy Wilson decided to watch him run right past him. Embarrassing.

  15. at least there is still a lot of time left

    1. Author

A lot of time left to analyze our draft pick next year.

  16. Author

Tannehill having a poor game. Just missing too many things in the second half

  17. Author

Brandon Fields is killing us today too.

  18. Author

Gronkowski just showed you how awful Philly Wheeler is. And Jimmy Wilson late to give him any help.

  19. Author

This entire debacle in the 3rd quarter is because Brady had time to throw. And Kevin Coyle allowed it by refusing to change anything.

Just saw a commercial for Big Bang Theory. Man, what did the blonde do to her hair?

  21. Author

I switched to the Bills game. I hope Buffalose wins the game so they finish ahead of us, and we’ll get a better draft pick. Time to tank the season on purpose.

  22. another late season collapse. Time to start contemplating if Philbin will be back next year.

    1. Author

We’ve been contemplatating that since the second game of the year.

  23. Author

    Rishard Matthews…nice catch. Not.

  24. Author

It was a 14-13 game whenJoe Philbin allowed the Patriots that free catch on a 20-yard incompletion. Changed our entire season with one single act of indecision. Just like last week when he refused to challenge the safety we scored.
This loss is hardly Philbin’s fault, but he sure did ‘t help.

  25. Author

On Tannehill’s last fumble that Juwuan James recovered, watch that again. His arm went forward exactly like Joe Flacco’s fumble last week. New England got the call today and Philbin never challenged.

    1. I just watched it again, his arm did go forward, but not with the ball in it. In slow motion, it becomes clearer that it’s an empty hand.

  26. This is saddening. I just cant even think about a new coach/system setting us back another 2 years at best if we ever can come back to the same level of bare respectability we’re at now. Jeez being a fan of this team is such torture with all the promising games and close losses only to let us all down when it matters the most.

    1. Author

It won’t take two years to learn a new system. We have pros on the team, and many potential all-stars. I mean, you and i could learn quantam calculus if we needed to and we were math pros.
Let’s just worry about removing the problem first, and then the solutions will find themselves.

      1. True but the uncertainty about the quality of coach that replaces Philbin could be another Scam Cameron. And if I cant be any more of a downer right now. I just realized that there is a real possibility we finish this season with a loosing record at 7-9. The way we are playing its more than possible.

  27. Author

When Brandon Gibson got roughed up, that was a live ball. When Gibson retaliated, that was a dead ball. Those penalties DO NOT offset. We shoulda had a first down instead of third and 28. Refs misinterpretated the dead ball foul rules, And our coach didn’t know either.

    1. No, Browner’s action was only unnecessary roughness because it was AFTER the whistle.

Once the whistle is blown, the ball is dead. So you had two dead ball penalties.

      1. Author

I’ll have to re-watch the play, but I thought the Browner penalty was not a late hit (after the whistle) but an unneccessary roughness (during play). I’ll stand corrected if I’m wrong.

Nice to see Jimmy Wilson smile after getting burned (again) by Edelmann. Photo coming soon.

Buffalo has Green Bay beat today because they outplayed the Packers and the Bills’ coach let the players play. Good things happen when the head coach stays out of it.

  30. Author

We need to put Matt Moore in the game and run it out. Someone is gonna get hurt

  31. Author

Man, these closeups of Philbin are actually hurting. I truly feel bad for the guy. That being said, I want a coach who looks furious in a 41-13 game. Not confused and ready to cry.

  32. Ugh, baseball season can’t arrive soon enough.

    1. The blocked field goal set the tone. Otherwise it woulda been a closer intense game.

      1. @Patriot Nation
Happy for your team and you. The payback has been delivered. Good luck to you the rest of the season.

  33. Think Ross will allow Philbin to finish the season? With a loss this bad and all the money in salaries I would be pissed if I were owner right now. Something predictable about our team allows others to exploit us game after game. I understand the injuries but the Pats pretty much did the same thing in the first half and we played them well. I felt they were saving Gronk for the 2nd half to soften our D to his presence. And we cant even muster a garbage time touchdown. Really?

    1. Author

Well, there really is no shame in losing to the Patriots, on their home turf, when they had a raucous crowd on their side and the refs in their pocket.
But you can’t look at this loss in a bubble. You have to take this loss in stride with other Philbin losses. Do not fire him because he lost to Nw England. Fire him because he lost other winnable games over three years. Fire him because he would not challenge plays. Fire him because he had zero plan to stop the bleeding in the 3rd quarter. He needed to do something, anything, to stop the Pats momentum in the 3rd. Even call a timeout like they do in basketball. A 14-13 game simply cannot end up at 41-13.

  34. Very frustrating I can’t speak…you guys summed it up.

    1. Author

Take our poll. We don’t even have to talk about this game.

  35. Well the Patriots beat the hell out of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde knock the roller coaster ride off the tracks and torn the wheels off of the little red wagon damn it man!

  36. Actually, the NFL rules DO allow this substitution.

    NFL Rule 5, Article 10

    Article 10

If a substitution is made by the offense, the offense shall not be permitted to snap the ball until the defense has been permitted to respond with its substitutions. While in the process of a substitution (or simulated substitution), the offense is prohibited from rushing quickly to the line of scrimmage and snapping the ball in an obvious attempt to cause a defensive foul (i.e., too many men on the field). If, in the judgment of the officials, this occurs, the following procedure will apply:

    (a) The Umpire will stand over the ball until the Referee deems that the defense has had a reasonable
    time to complete its substitutions.

    (b) If a play takes place and a defensive foul for too many players on the field results, no penalties will be
enforced, except for personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct, and the down will be replayed. At
this time, the Referee will notify the head coach that any further use of this tactic will result in a penalty
    for unsportsmanlike conduct.

    1. Author

Mike you are correct about that rule existing. HOWEVER, the Dolphins did not make a hurry substitution. There was no hurry-up offense. In no way whatsoever were the Dolphins trying to pull a fast one.
As a matter of fact, it was New England who was being sneaky. They PURPOSELY left a 12th man on the field and waited until Miami lined up.
The Pats then saw what formation the Dolphins used, and they then decided which of their defenders to run off the field. The Patriots worked that rule to their favor, and the refs got conned.
In your quote, the rules say that Miami is prohibited from “rushing quickly to the line of scrimmage and snapping the ball.” There was NOTHING quick about that play. The rule you mentioned only applies if the Dolphins raced to the line to fool the Pats.

      1. Since you’ve given no specifics at all about the play, all I can go by is the photo. The ref is acting as if the Dolphins have substituted.

He’s between the quarterback and the center, with his arms out.
