Last week, the booth announcers mentioned several times how bad the Dolphins’ offense was last year. About 5 different times, they mentioned that Miami was ranked 27th in third-down conversions last year and like 30th on 4th down. Unacceptable and terrible.
But they didn’t mention their thoughts as to why. I’m here to tell you that Adam Gase is why. His play calling, especially on short-yardage situations, is the culprit. I know last week was only preseason, but early on we faced a 4th and inches, and Gase called a pass play. As usual. The play worked, and we got a first down. that still does not make it the right call, however.
Gase’s standard 4th-and-inches formation is always the shotgun set. When we need to move the ball forward 6 inches, Tannehill begins the play 7 yards deep. 21 feet. 252 inches. It’s flawed logic, but Gase is a stubborn man, as we’ve learned. He’s always trying to prove his genius over the opponents’ defense by crossing them up, but it rarely works. Just look at the stats from last year. We rarely converted. There’s a time and place for the shotgun, but 4th and inches is not it.
I think that Kyle Petty looked the best among the 3 backup QBs last week. But it seems like Gase will give the job to his Bear buddy David Fales. I’d be cool with that if Fales outplays everyone and earns the job, but Gase has a bad history of just handing jobs to guys he likes, such as busts like Julius Thomas and Jay Cutler, to name a few.
Speaking of busts, there were rumors that Miami may trade DeVante Parker. We can only hope it’s true.
Dolphins executive Tom Garfunkel join the booth to talk about the Dolphins and….I’m just kidding. He didn’t talk about the Dolphins. Much like his boss Stephen Ross, he talked about tennis, soccer, parking lots, Taylor Swift and other non-Dolphin hype. We can only some day dream to have an owner and staff devoted to our beloved Dolphins, instead of treating the Dolphins like just one of many fun activities that happen to share Sun Life Stadium.

Offense has a fumble and then ineffective. Defense rolls over without a single stop. Long season ahead
Miami’s starters other than that horrible touchdown run didn’t do to bad. This is a Carolina team that embarrassed Miami on MNF last season so to see the first team compete with Carolinas is a step forward from last season.
We’re supposed to be seeing some hurry up offensive play, but it looks like nobody told Tannehill. Incredible how this guy can slow down whats supposed to be a quick offensive scheme.
Funny how that 1st and goal series after the INT and runback mimiced exactly what admin stated here.
Gase is not a good offensive coach.
God I wish we had Norv Turner back!
Also admin no one mentioned that one of the other reasons our offense sucked last year was our starting QB was out the entire year!
“one of the other reasons our offense sucked last year was our starting QB was out the entire year!?”
Um, that’s quite a stretch there, don’tcha think?
Me…I blame the coach….this is preseason so take some chances …..also what irks me is he put players in positions they have never played before …..his play calling has to be the worst in the league …2nd and 15 run…2 yards gained 3rd and 13 run ,,2 yards gained …punt ..next series need 3rd and 8 and throw a 2 yard pass….I don’t know how much longer I can put up with this garbage ….last night they were in the red zone what 5 or 6 time and all they came out with was field goals …just pitiful …and for the people that say its just preseason ….get ready for a 5 win year….maybe goodbye to head Case to.
Absolutely agree. Third and 8 & Gase calls for a three yard crossing pattern. Third and 15 and we try a draw. Third and inches and he tries a 40 yard out-route. He has no flow in play calling
Trying to fool a fool makes you a fool….but it’s preseason.
Tanny was pretty good too should mention that. Without starting WR’s
You gentlemen are preaching to the choir. The problem is further aggravating because Mr. Tannehill doesn’t seem to have urgency on third downs. On numerous third-and-8 or third-and-9, he tosses the ball 3 yards and teh WR gets creamed right away. T-hill has to know the situation. 3 yards is useless. Throw a bomb downfield instead. If it’s picked off, no big deal because the same as a punt. Gettting 3 yards is better than nothing…but ONLY on first down.
How about when our pal Gase called the exact same bubble screen 2 plays in a row. Failed both times.
We’ve tried 11 bubble screens this season.
This team hasn’t pulled off a screen in a decade. The play calling is so bad. Tannehill went what 14 of 16 last night with one throw over 8 yards?
What a joke. In 2nd and goal from like the 16 yard line we run. All we have heard this preseason is about the tightend play in the red zone but we don’t throw to the te at all we run for 2 yards?
I’m more worried about run D is it the players or scheme. They were giving up a lot all game no matter who was out there. They also had a hard time running themselves. If you can’t run or stop the run it doesn’t bode well.
Petty looked good again I know it’s against bums but he drops back finds the open guy and fires it repeat. Moves the chains. Give this guy a chance or he’ll go to NE…
Why are guys like Derby out there while the rookie gets no time?
Maybe they don’t want to show anything in preseason but some of the calls are baffling. I’d rather get good at the basics so they become bread and butter than call a play that makes no sense.
Where is this 6 ft 6 tight end their boasting about …he doesn’t have 1 catch in 2 preseason games…..
I think it took until the 4th quarter when Petty was in to throw to the rookie TE because they played Darby the whole game. I don’t get that. Meanwhile Carolina scored a TD with their 4th round TE as they gave him a chance.
The Carolina announcers basically said that you can’t win consistently by dinking and dunking as it’s too hard these days to be perfect all the way down the field. You need some chunk plays. Fins need to try a few shots…
When we began 1st and goal after Xavien’s interception, we went backwards. That was Gase playcalling at its worst. Sadly, I do NOT think Gase called basic plays because it was preseason. He would have called the same garbage sequence in the regular season. His failed logic is frustrating, but his refusal to try something new is infuriating.
I agree. You know, It’s sad, but while I looking at the game all the way into about the middle of the 4th quarter, I couldn’t help but think, “man, this play calling looks the same since the days of Joe Philbin.” I was wondering why Gase don’t just air it out a few times to keep Carolina on their toes. I mean, it’s just a preseason game. If this is what we can look forward to since getting rid of Landry, all I can say then “it’s going to be one long frustrating season.”
