Well, the word is that the Dolphins will not bring in Mike Munchak.  This is a questionable move in my book.  The man is a Hall of Famer with head coaching experience.  Doesn’t that deserve at least an interview?

In addition, seems like Rex Ryan and Mike McCarthy were never considered.  This too is puzzling.

Look, I’m not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth.  Firing Gase was the best thing we could have done, and Mr. Ross did so.  But it seems the new coaching search is suffering from tunnel vision, where they are only looking at young coordinators from other teams, namely the Cowboys DB coach and the Patriots LB coach.

I won’t mind if they hire one of those 2 men.  But I would have liked to see the Dolphins interview a few more.    Darren Rizzi will get a token interview, but you get the feeling he’s not a serious candidate.    How do you ignore Mike McCarthy?  Why not let Rex Ryan come in and ask him 10 things he’d do to make us a champion and 10 things you did wrong in NY and in Buffalo.   Maybe they have learned from their mistakes.

Seems like Chris Grier is a young GM and he’s gravitating toward young coaching candidates.   That’s fine, but at least interview some older guys for comparison.

  1. I totally agree but perhaps those guys simply don’t want to come here so they don’t even ask. Some vets don’t want to find the QB etc…they prefer to tweak and win immediately. Haven’t heard Schwartz either and he coached up that Philly D big time on Sunday…

Yeah, good point about Schwartz. I haven’t heard his name among all the other 8 teams who need coaches either.
If he beats the Saints this weekend, his value will soar.

  2. I think Munchak is going to be Denver’s next coach that’s why Miami cancelled. I personally would prefer Richard from the cowboys over Flores from the Pats.

  3. Richard has the pedigree and I’m all in for him like I said before.

  4. And I’m fine with 3-13 IF we are heading in the right direction-starting from scratch.

  5. The Dolphins will be the next Browns for the next 5 years at least. No good coaches or QBs available, just other team’s rejects.

    1. How is Richard a reject? How does what you said make any sense?

      1. Author

I wouldn’t call him a reject. But he’s not even a coordinator either. He’s a DB coach. That is a huge leap from a positional coach to HC. But he was a DC in Seattle, so that’s something positive.

        1. That’s silly. So according to your logic,if you’re currently ONLY a position coach, you’re not worthy? He was a good DC in Seattle before the idiot Carroll fired him.

          1. Author

He MAY be worthy. We won’t know. We do know that when Dan Quinn left the Seahawks, their defense was not the same. They haven’t advanced in the playoffs. Quinn > Richard when it comes to defensive play calling. But Quinn is awful as a HC, given that he blew a 25-pt lead vs. New England in the Super Bowl. it’s all a crap shoot. But generally, yes, I question the experience of a positional coach making the leap to head coach.

            1. Author

I also question Pete Carroll firing the guy way too soon. Pete’s Super Bowl decisions were even more famously bad than Dan Quinn.

It’s hard to fathom, but if Carroll and Quinn had simply called a handoff in their respective Super Bowls vs. the Pats, then they both win. And Brady would be a medicore 3-5 in Super Bowls.

              1. Please don’t remind me they F’d up history big time…because they couldn’t run the damn ball to seal the deal. Sounds familiar….

      2. Agreed to be honest if Richard or one of the vet coaches fall to the Fins it could be a blessing in disguise. These other teams are going hot shot flashy coordinators which may not pan out. I’d like a level headed guy…

Lots of articles the past week critical of Gase. One of the Sun Sentinal writers called him immature. The Herald (obviously reading my site) called him “Arrogant.” My question is, why are these guys NOW realizing it? How did they not see this happening in the middle of Gase’s tenure like I did and many of you did as well.
Barry Jackson, who I normally like, wrote a ridiculous column today about Kenyan Drake didn’t get enough carries in 2018. I guess Barry forgot about a guy named Frank Gore. Granted, if Gore sucked (a la Arian Foster or Daniel Thomas), then you give the next man up a chance. However, if one of your backs proves to be dominant and (in several games) unstoppable, then sorry Drake. We’re going to play the hot hand.

    1. I bet that he meant that Gase overall should have ran the ball more last season which we all agree with especially when leading the damn game. Don’t take any away from Gore but actually give Drake and Ballage more carries too and the team would have been more successful instead of passing when it wasn’t necessary. He blew at least two games because of his idiocy. To top it off every week I see QB sneaks to win games and this idiot only called one in 3 years…

Also, looks like Todd Bowles is gonna run the Tampa D, and Dirk Koetter will run the Atlanta offense. I LOVE the idea of experienced head coaches being brought in to run a unit, not the other way around. Part of Gase’s and Philbin’s failures were their choices of young, no-name (and no-talent) coordinators.

    1. Agreed at least one of them should have experience especially if the HC is a newbie too…

Google “Kris Richard” and then look at the google pop-up results on the right side of your page! LOL

  9. Seems kinda stubborn for Ross and Grier to only interview young position coaches,
I think it’s insane to ignore Rex Ryan and Mike McCarthy and other former HCs just because you think youth is better. In the workplace, that’s called age discrimination and it’s very illegal. And it’s pretty stupid. Like Admin said, let Rex and Mike come in and ask their views on turning us around. At least listen to them instead of simply “knowing” that a young defensive backs coach in Dallas is better than a proven Super Bowl winner like Mike Mc.

  10. It is concerning me the hiring is taking this long….but if it’s getting the right coach, I’ll be happy. This team hasn’t hired a former head coach in a long time and I would like to see that happen. Anybody here that was hoping for Bruce Arians?

    1. Author

Arians would have been an upgrade over Gase for sure, and he seemed like an intriguing option. I understand he only wanted the Tampa job, and he wasn’t interested in Miami.
He was one (of many) announcers this year who called a Dolphin game and said “I’m surprised that Adam Gase called that play in that situation” I’ll have more on this in an upcoming article. Everyone second guessed Gase!

    2. If Miami wants Richard or Flores they have to wait for their teams to lose in the playoffs. Every report I’ve seen says those are the top two on Miami’s list. Personally that would be interesting and hear me out on this. Miami would have the only GM coach combo in football that are both miniorities. This might actually help Miami recruit players in free agency in today’s political atmosphere and the fact that the majority of players in the NFL are miniorities.

      1. Author

I think $$$ are the main decision makers in why free agents move, but your point might be valid.
I remember when Suh signed with Miami and gave his press conference talking about how Miami was his only choice because of Coach Philbin. I was like “Who do you think you’re fooling!!”

  11. Admin, IYO, is there any possibility the Dolphins go for and miraculously get Jim Harbaugh? I don’t hear any rumblings from the various outlets I listen to and read. Just for giggles fans, I’m up in NJ and the Jets sports talk radio hosts are ready to jump off the ledge! Fans are in line to do the same. Our goal-no matter who the coach ends up getting hired-against the Jets is to beat Adam Gase and his arrogance. You best believe he already has this vendetta on his list for the season’s calendar.

    1. Author

It is possible, given Ross’s ability to pursue people (i.e., his money). I think he’d be a good coach. But here’s my whole take:

Several outlets said Harbaugh WANTS to stay at Michigan, for many reasons. He already makes millions, so $$ is not a deciding factor. But he also has his home there. Family (his parents live so close to the school that they have lunch together.) That’s a lot of comfort to give up. I’d stay put if I were him. He has tremendous job security already: he gets blown out of football games and still his job is safe.
Here is what I’m leery of…
Seems like he wants to stay at Michigan, so Ross will have to talk him into the Dolphins job. And whenever anyone is talked into something, they go in half-heartedly. We all do, in any situation. If he were avid and enthusiastic about wanting the job, (like Rex Ryan), then he’d come in dying to succeed. But if he allowed himself to take a job he didn’t really want or need…how much heart would he pour into it?
We went through that with Jimmy Johnson. He wanted to quit because he had no passion left. Foolish Wayne Huizenga begged and pleaded with him to stay (“You can coach home games only, if you want” was the famous offer). Jimmy stayed, and we had a terrible season before Jimmy handed the keys to Dave Wanstedt.
The lesson? Don’t EVER talk a guy into taking a job. Wait for someone who is dying for that job.
And I also fear we’d be the laughing stock of the NFL if Ross goes after Jim H again. It was so embarrassing for Ross to go to California to court Harbough once before (while Sparano was our coach). It was even MORE embarrassing when Harbaugh turned him down. Imagine having to go through that again? Even if Jim H says yes, then all we will ever hear is “Ross got spurned and rejected, but finally persisted and got the man he courted loved.” It doesn’t sound very footballish, does it?

The guy said NO. Move on.
