Well, last week, everything went against the Dolphins as far as tiebreakers and the other AFC teams involved.   But this weekend, things got a little brighter.

Last week, for example, the Saints laid down and forget to show up for their home game against the Bengals.  But yesterday, the Saints came out strong in Pittsburgh and did us a favor by disposing of the Steelers.  We need more such favors throughout December.

It turns my stomach to have to root for the Bills, but I had to yesterday, since Cleveland was ahead of us in the standings and we needed them to lose.  They did lose.  How on earth are the Browns even in the playoff mix?  What a pathetic team.

The Packers beating New England was a gift that we’ll take.  And Denver beating KC was to our advantage too.  You gotta figure Denver will win the division, so KC is our rival for the wild card.  We needed KC to lose, and they did so.

San Diego vs. Baltimore was tough to figure out who to root for, but the Chargers’ win is what we wanted and got.  We already defeated the Chargers, so if we end up tied with them, we have the advantage.   So we needed the Chargers to knock off another potential wild card team, the Ravens.  Baltimore choked at home and blew a big 4th quarter lead.  I hope they are demoralized as they head to Miami next week.

So a bunch of teams now sit at 7-5, and the Dolphins can join them at 7-5 tonight.  If Miami wins, they overtake the pack and leap into the Number Six spot.   Since there are more than two teams at 7-5, there is no head-to-head tiebreaker.  It falls to the 3-team tiebreaker, and the Dolphins prevail based on its AFC record.

It’s early, and our grasp of that 6 seed would be tenuous.  But for now, it’s a great goal to aim for, and it should give us some added incentive against the Jets.

Meanwhile, we’re actually in an odd situation throughout December where we may need to root for some of our AFC rivals.  For example, if we end up in a two-way tie with the Chiefs, we lose.   Our only hope is for a Three-way tie, which nullifies the Chiefs win over Miami as a tiebreaker.

The only problem is that some of the teams who could be part of that jumbled tie will be dropping like flies.  The Bills and Browns, for example, are not going to be around at the end of December.  Neither team is for real.  The Steelers could be around, and we may need them to be.  The Texans continue to stick around based on their weak division.

It’s early, and a lot can and will happen.  But for now, it’s nice to know that if we win tonight, we will be listed in the Wild Card leaders scenario, and not one of the other Outside-Looking-In teams.

  1. Soooo….it’s :51 until halftime, and the score is 0-10 (Jets).

Oddly enough I missed almost the entire 1st half (wife wanted to watch something – too tired to argue). Anyway, since tuning in at just before 2:00, I’ve seen us get sacked, throw 2 near interceptions, a serious injury (player impact-wise in Jelani Jenkins), and a bunch of horrible football on our part.

Update: We just scored a field goal just before the end of the half.

Nonetheless – what the heck is going on here?? Jeez – we just almost beat the Broncos; what – are we going to almost beat the Jets too?

  2. Lets see how our 2nd half adjustments look. The Dolphins and Coach Philbin are infamous for their Jeckyl and Hyde games. Remember we were loosing to the Pats at the half before we took the game back. Not ready to give in and our D seems to be waking up. Let them run all their gimmick plays all they want. We will be on it 2nd half. Fearthephin!

  3. Mint- she did you a favor. The Jets have over 200 yards rushing in the first half, and at one point, ran 23 out of 24 plays. I have never seen a pro football team allow a team to do that to them. I am embarrassed for them- absolutely pathetic.

How is it that when Philbin gets extra prep time, his team comes out flatter than if they only had 3 days rest?? This has happened for years. We don’t win because of him, we win in spite of him.

If we lost today, we need to blow this up. This is unforgivable…..

    1. Well – at least they won! I would have been as pissed as you at that point had I actually seen the half. As it was I was a combination of confused and just plain disappointed.

The truth is we SHOULD be winning these types of games, but we also SHOULD’NT be losing like that in the 1st half to these types of teams.

Most positive note – we are back in the playoff picture!

  4. Lets see if the hometown Jets reffs give us the obvious fumble.

Jets try to destroy Wake’s knees. Typical classless Jets.

    1. Worst part was it happened play side, right in front of a ref!

Don’t do a stupid pooch kick

  9. These two teams were complete garbage tonight. Tannehill is nothing more then a backup.

  10. Wow- hard to call this a win. There should be a “didn’t lose” column. I don’t think this sh*t would fly against any other team in the NFL. We better get things fixed on both sides of the ball.

400 yards rushing given up in two games?? So much for the “best defense in the league.”

  11. Why not flex out of a Monday game like this, everyone new this game was going to suck, because both teams are garbage.

  12. Bill- I take it you are a Jets fan. One of those with narrow eyes that are too small for his face, with pasty, pock marked skin.

Your mom will be home soon, so better turn off the basement light….

  13. Ugly ass game but a win is a win. We really didn’t look like a play-off team tonight and this late in the season that is very alarming. Offensive line play was very inconsistent tonight as Tannehill was hurried on a lot of throws. Anyone who still thinks Tannehill should be a back-up at this point should find a new sport because they simply don’t understand this football thing.

  14. Just win baby! Plenty of time to bitch during the week. We knew this game would be tough. The difference between last year and this one can be understood in the win loss column. Don’t sour our victory too soon. Celebrate guys. We can commiserate with our friends the Jets fans tomorrow. BTW Game ball goes to the Jets kicker! Thankyou so much! 🙂

    P.S. Dion Jordan’s contribution?
    Fearthephin!

LOL. Dolphins game ball awarded to Nick Foles.

  15. Thankyou Jets for your excellent special teams play! And D-Truth its Mr Nick Folks. The best Miami Dolphins player wearing a Jets jersey!

    1. Author

Oh Yeah, I meant Folk not Foles. The Jets wish they had Nick Foles. Or Mark Sanchez. Or Joe Namath.

I’ll be coming up with a blog about the Ravens game later this week, but the botton line for now is that the Ravens are beatable. They don’t do well against quality opponents, and they feast on inept cellar-dwellers. It all depends on which Dolphins offense show up…the ones who scored 36 vs Denver or the ones who got one touchdown vs the Jets

  16. Baltimore should sign the Jets kicker! That would really kick our season into high gear. Pun intended!
