I think, finally, that the Tyreek Hill situation might make Chris Grier get smarter when it comes to trades and free agent signings.
Despite what Grier thinks, and despite what the players say publicly, and despite what the media portrays…I have a different take on things: Most free agents who sign with the Dolphins do so because they want the South Beach lifestyle and the lack of income taxes.
Tyreek Hill and Jalen Ramsey were not technically free agents, but they lobbied to be traded to the Dolphins, which is the same thing in essence.
I have always been leery of free agents who say the usual, typical things:
- “I wanted to play here.”
- “I know all about Coach McDaniel, and I can’t wait to play for him.”
- “I want to be a part of what the Dolphins are building and help get us over the hump.”
Let’s be real. The Dolphins have been mediocre for many years, and no one comes here because we’re on the cusp of a Super Bowl. No one comes here to be coached by Mike McDaniel. (Just like I laughed when Ndamukong Suh said (lied) he signed here because he wanted to play for Joe Philbin. Or else Reggie White famously quit on the Eagles to go sign with the Packers…not because of the zillion dollars that the Packers threw at him, but because he prayed what to do. Seriously?) Players sign with the Dolphins because no one else wanted them (Jordan Poyer) or because they want the lifestyle.
People sign with the Bills and Chiefs because they have a true shot at winning a Super Bowl. People sign with the Dolphins for the weather and the waves.
Let’s hope Grier sees that finally. Tyreek Hill had a great year in 2023, but otherwise he’s been a troublesome addition. Jalen Ramsey has been our best CB, but that is truly not saying much. He’s not a game changer, that’s for sure. Odell Beckham. Chase Claypool. The list goes on.
In Grier’s defense, there is no test for loyalty. Before trading for Hill or Ramsey, could you seriously ask them, “Are you a team player? Will you try your hardest? Is a Super Bowl your goal?” Of course everyone is going to lie! They just want Ross’s money. So Grier has to be better at that. Do his research. Really test a guy’s heart as well as his durability.
You see this on other players, but not too many Dolphins except for maybe Zach Seiler. Giving it their all on every play. THOSE are the guys we want.
We have no chance with Grier. I don’t expect himt o find 2 starting guards, A starting DT, A LB and maybe 2 new safeties all while needing to add depth a plenty of positions when our players get hurt. He will miss on half of these!!
